My eighth grade class read the New York Times article the next day for our ReAl (Read Aloud). We discussed Nyad's triumph and I shared with them my knowledge of her previous struggles and attempts. Throughout her trials, Ms. Nyad didn't give up. She set her goals and worked hard to accomplish them.
One thing I want my students to take away from class is that learning is not limited to the time spent at school. We continue to learn by our experiences and choices. Whether the goal is to have all A's and B's or finish that book series, setting goals and keeping them in front of us at all times helps us to make changes in our lives and grow stronger.
That is why, this week, my Monday Motivation is Diane Nyad, who said (through strained voice and sea-scrubbed lips):
“I have three messages...
One is we should never, ever give up.
One is we should never, ever give up.
Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams.
Three is it looks like a solitary sport, but it’s a team.”
Final Note: This post is also my "shout-out" to Laura Crawford, an Illinois author and teacher who lost her battle with cancer last week. She was an inspiration to everyone she met. Like Ms. Nyad, Laura made her dreams come true by sharing her personal passion with the world. R.I.P. Laura.
